Farpoint Options Award-Winning Film Strong Son From Ian Bawa

Farpoint Films has optioned, Strong Son, from Winnipeg filmmaker Ian Bawa, who will write and direct the script based on his award-winning autobiographical drama. The film is being produced by Kyle Bornais and Tony Wosk and will to go into production in 2022.

Strong Son centres on a South Asian bodybuilder that moves back into his elderly father's house in order to take care of him while maintaining his own physical and mental health while becoming his father's primary caregiver.

The film will take a deeper look into the themes of male toxicity, how poisoning it can be to grow up in that environment and how at a certain age parents can no longer take care of themselves and their children must do it for them.

“When I first watched Ian's short film, I was struck by how personal it was and I was immediately drawn to the themes he presented as both a son and a father,” said producer Kyle Bornais of Farpoint Films. “Having known and worked with Ian for the better part of a decade, I am excited to see what he does with this feature and glad I get to be along for the ride.”

Bawa is an award-winning filmmaker whose previous projects, including Tapeworm and Imitations, have screened around the world. Strong Son premiered at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival and then went on to screen at the Vancouver International Film Festival and the South Western International Film Festival.

"Strong Son is a very personal and important story to me. Farpoint Films has not only been a supporter and champion of me and my past work over the years, but has also shown an understanding and belief in my projects, and because of that I feel that they are the best partners to help bring this story to life,” said Ian Bawa. “The reception I received after the short film screened at festivals tells me that there is more of this story to tell, and that people want to hear stories from diverse voices. As a person of colour, I am excited to share this story, my story, to the rest of the world."
